Transition The Gap has been operating since January 2009, following a presentation at Woodford Folk Festival by Janet Millington and Sonya Wallace from Transition Sunshine Coast. We immediately set about contacting other community groups in the area, with a view to establishing a community garden and facilitating public awareness and discussion evenings. A small steering group of 5 – 10 people was soon formed, meeting fortnightly at a local residence. We have shown the films Power of Community, Story of Stuff, Think Global: Eat Local and In Transition 1.0. Between 30 and 50 people have attended each of these film showings with lively discussions and directed group interaction. Our latest evening was a Visioning night which had groups of people in intense discussions imagining life in 2030 and the Transition processes leading to that time. Members of our group have been very involved in the successful establishment and ongoing construction of our local Yoorala Street Community Garden, which has been received very enthusiastically by nearby residents and has the full support of political representatives at city, state and federal level. Transition The Gap has fostered and encouraged the formation of other nearby Transition Initiatives and are very active members of the Brisbane Transition Hub. Advertisements and community notices in local papers have helped to attract new members to both Transition The Gap and Yoorala Street Community Garden. We are also organising monthly family picnics near the garden, to encourage the involvement of families with young children. At these picnics, there is informal discussion around Transition, together with local musicians and shared food. These have become a celebration of our progress so far.
