We feel it, we see it, we live it. Our climate is changing, and it is no longer about just reducing our carbon footprint. Transition Salt Spring is leading the local response to climate change, to build a future that leaves no one behind. It includes creating a resilient Salt Spring Island that is safe and vibrant for all. Transition Salt Spring is taking the lead on climate action on the island, marshalling our collective energy and creativity to cut emissions in half by 2030. At the same time, we are working to ensure that we are taking steps to protect our homes, infrastructure, our community and our ecosystems as the effects of climate change accelerate. In 2021, After more than a year and a half of work on the part of a team of 30+ local volunteers and feedback from 2,000 islanders and 50 stakeholders, we released the Salt Spring Island Climate Action Plan (CAP 2.0) — a roadmap with more than 250 recommendations on what we all need to do now to ensure a sustainable future for Salt Spring Island. To implement this plan, we’ve been developing a strong and active network of islanders, businesses, non-profit groups, agencies and government to collaborate in the development of the projects and initiatives recommended in CAP 2.0 and beyond. TSS is working every day to: • Help islanders lower their personal emissions and match them up with incentive programs • Advocate for the protection of our forests as our best tool for locking in carbon and reducing the risk of forest fire to our homes and properties. • Encourage the transition to electric vehicles for school and public transit, ferries, water taxis, and personal vehicles and bikes. • Expand bike paths and multi-use trails • Create community chipping and composting facilities • Promote the importance of, and provide opportunities for water collection and retention • Ensure that no one is left behind as we transition to a greener economy, acknowledging the fact that there are demographics in our community who are more certainly impacted by climate change

Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, is the largest and most populous of the Southern Gulf Islands, situated between Vancouver Island and the Mainland. In a north-south direction Salt Spring Island is about halfway between Nanaimo and Victoria, the capital city of BC. The population is approximately  10,000. Nearby islands on the Canadian side of the 49th parallel are: Galiano, Mayne, Pender (North & South), Prevost and Saturna being the larger ones. To the southeast and on the U.S. side of the border lie the San Juan Islands in Washington State.
